The title of this piece refers to both the pecking order established among crows, as well as the order established between humans and crows. It seems the only way for humans to accept the increasing presence of crows is if they serve the human in some way. In this way, a “pecking order” is established. The crow with the vending machine is also pecking for peanuts based on unseen “orders” coming from humans.
